Donkeys at Poynton Show Poynton Show was one of the first agricultural shows in England who welcomed donkeys to be exhibited, and over thirty five years later we are still here and as popular as ever with the public. Why donkeys? Is a question I regularly get asked when I tell people I own them. My answer is why not!!!! The donkey is one of the most clever and misunderstood animals which we have domesticated. Often described as stupid when a donkey refuses to carry out our command, we must stop and think why our donkey does not want to walk through a puddle (it may be deep) or jump over a log (does he know what is on the other side?). You wonder why your pony is wonderful with the farrier and not the donkey, but often people clean the ponies feet out daily and leave the donkey until the farrier comes on his next visit - no wonder he does not like the farrier. With regular handling, time spent training and the time to allow trust to build between donkey and handler, the donkey will be as willing and able as most ponies to please you. BUT they do have a sense of humour and just when you are not expecting it, they will dig their heels in and say NO!!!!!!!!!! At Poynton show this year you see them being ridden, driven and being shown in-hand. Stallions, mares and hopefully a foal or two will be on display, so come over and visit us and say hello to our intelligent furry friends.
